Lanzarote is the closest of the Canary Islands to Africa, just over 100 km away and a bit more than 1000 km from the mainland Spain. Its spectacular beaches and volcanic landscapes, with average annual temperature of 22°, Lanzarote is also known as the Island of eternal spring.
Costa Teguise, with its choice of beaches, pretty market square, tapas bars, pavement cafes and wide choice of restaurants, has plenty going on, but retains a fairly relaxed, laid back atmosphere. For those who like to do a bit of holiday shopping, the island capital, Arrecife, is just a short bus ride away and a visit to the volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park is highly recommended.
Playa Blanca is a relatively peaceful resort situated on the south west corner of the island, but still with a good selection of cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from. There is a sandy beach, marina and a varied array of shops. From Playa Blanca, visitors can also take a day trip to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.
Puerto del Carmen
Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote's biggest and busiest resort. Lining the wide, sweeping beach of Playa Grande is the promenade, filled with a seemingly endless array of shops, bars and restaurants. The laid back harbour area is well worth a visit to sample the fresh fish restaurants and tapas bars, or simply to watch the sunset with a cocktail or two.
